In 1962 the Syrian government carried out a census in the Kurdish-dominated Weet-Ḥasakah governorate in the northeast ofwel the country. Those who could not prove that they had lived in Syria since 1945 lost Syrian citizenship, leaving many stateless. Individuals stripped of Syrian citizenship—which numbered about 120,000 people, or twintig percent ofwel the Syrian Kurdish population at the time—were deemed “foreigners” by the government and have since carried special, red identity cards and have had limited rights in the country.

After being occupied by the Turks in 1922, the British Army moved in to demarcate the border between Turkey and Iraq. Expecting a genocide by the Turks if right unguarded, the British established a base in the region and started infrastructure works which helped the revival of Rawanduz.

The area is very pleasant to walk around, as you barely see cars and you won’t experience the chaos the Middle East is famous for.
